Vitiligo
What is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disorder characterised by the loss of pigmentation, resulting in white patches on the skin. It occurs when the melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin (skin pigment), are damaged or destroyed.
Causes of Vitiligo
The exact cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of factors, including:
Autoimmune Response: An overactive immune system may mistakenly target and destroy melanocytes.
Genetics: A family history of vitiligo may increase the risk of developing the condition.
Environmental Factors: Trauma, stress, or exposure to certain chemicals may trigger or exacerbate vitiligo in susceptible individuals.
Treatment Options for Vitiligo
Topical Corticosteroids: These creams can help repigment affected areas by reducing inflammation.
Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors: Non-steroidal medications that control inflammation, suitable for sensitive areas.
Narrowband UVB Phototherapy: Controlled exposure to UVB light can stimulate melanocyte activity and encourage repigmentation.
Excimer Lamp/Laser: This targeted light-based therapy can be effective in repigmenting small areas.
Microskin and Camouflage Makeup: Specialised cosmetic products can help conceal vitiligo patches.
Depigmentation: In cases of extensive vitiligo, depigmentation of the remaining skin can create a more uniform appearance.
Treatment effectiveness varies from person to person, and a combination of approaches may be necessary.
