Hidradenitis Suppurativa
What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), is a chronic skin condition characterised by the formation of painful, recurring nodules or abscesses under the skin. These typically occur in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and under the breasts. HS can lead to tunnels or tracts under the skin, causing scarring and skin changes.
Causes of Hidradenitis Suppurativa
The exact cause of HS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of factors, including:
Obstruction of Hair Follicles: HS often begins with the blockage or inflammation of hair follicles, leading to the formation of painful lumps.
Immune System Dysfunction: An overactive immune response is thought to contribute to the ongoing inflammation and abscess formation.
Genetics: Family history may play a role, as HS tends to occur more frequently in individuals with a family history of the condition.
Treatment Options
Topical Treatments: Prescription creams applied directly to affected areas can reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Oral Antibiotics: Low dose antibiotics are often prescribed to reduce inflammation.
Intralesional Injections: In some cases, corticosteroid injections into individual lesions can provide relief.
Biologics: These medications target specific immune system pathways and have been shown to be effective in managing HS.
Surgical treatments: This can include deroofing and/or wider excision of affected areas
Lifestyle Adjustments: Minimising friction in affected areas, quitting smoking and weight management are helpful in managing HS.
