Skin Cancer

Types of Skin Cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer:

  1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): This is the most common type and often appears as a flesh-coloured or pearly bump with visible blood vessels.

  2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): This may present as a raised scaly lesion and is the second most common form of skin cancer

  3. Melanoma: Melanoma is less common but is a more aggressive form of skin cancer. It often appears as a dark, irregular mole or lesion that has changed in size, shape, or colour.

Causes

The primary cause of skin cancer is excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, whether from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Other risk factors include fair skin, a history of severe sunburns, a family history of skin cancer, and immunosuppression.

Treatment Options

Effective treatment options for skin cancer include:

  1. Surgery: Most skin cancers are removed through surgical procedures like excision, Mohs surgery, or curettage and cautery.

  2. Radiation Therapy: This method uses high-energy X-rays to target and destroy cancer cells, often used when surgery is not an option.

  3. Topical Medications: For superficial skin cancers, topical treatments like imiquimod or fluorouracil may be recommended.

  4. Immunotherapy, Targeted Therapy, and Chemotherapy: These options may be considered for advanced cases of skin cancer.

Early detection and treatment are crucial in effectively managing skin cancer. Regular self-examination and professional skin checks with a dermatologist can help identify and address potential skin cancer concerns. Protecting your skin from UV radiation and practicing sun-safe behaviours are also essential in reducing your risk of skin cancer.
